The British Isles, a Euler diagram

British Isles terminology diagram

I discovered this diagram on Wikipedia and found it fascinating. As a scanner, there’s something very satisfying for me to be able to quickly understand something that’s been foggy for a long time.

This diagram explains the relationship between terms like England, Great Britain, UK, and British Isles.

Did you know that the Isle of Man is outside the UK? Or that the Republic of Ireland is in the British Isles but not the British Islands? Am I the only person to care? Leave a comment and let me know!

I use this sort of diagram frequently when analysing complex categorisations. (I was taught New Maths and the idea of “Sets” and call this type of diagram a Venn Diagram.) I find it a really useful tool for making sense of the world.

I also happen to be from Northern Ireland and could add further dimensions of nomenclature for some of the above categories as used by different cultual/political groups!

Finakky, I am interested that the above diagram does not include the category of “Britain” which I think includes England and Wales but not Scotland? In other words I think Britain is a subset of Great Britain.

I studied Venn Diagrams in math class at school and always thought they were a great way to describe a concept which is hard to put into words. This is an interesting way to explain the politics of the British Isles. Could also be a good way to explain some relationships.
