Making money, Scanner resources
Comments Off on Do you Squidoo?
Squidoo is a place you can share your expertise on a topic with the rest of the world. It’s a cross between Wikipedia and a blog and it’s perfect for Scanners. Write a “lens” on your latest passion and then you can link to your own website to create traffic.
Scanners Night regular Rosemary has written a lens on “Earning money when you have a Scanner personality”. Have a read.
Squidoo was created by marketing brainiac Seth Godin. If you’re feeling entrepreneurial, have a read of his blog. I love it.

I discovered this diagram on Wikipedia and found it fascinating. As a scanner, there’s something very satisfying for me to be able to quickly understand something that’s been foggy for a long time.
This diagram explains the relationship between terms like England, Great Britain, UK, and British Isles.
Did you know that the Isle of Man is outside the UK? Or that the Republic of Ireland is in the British Isles but not the British Islands? Am I the only person to care? Leave a comment and let me know!

Where I’ve Been In The World
This application is fun if a little broad brush-stroke outside of the US (e.g. going to Bali for a week paints the whole of Indonesia blue).
Suddenly I feel very under-travelled.

Do you have an idea for a book, a business or other project? Barbara Sher (Queen of the Scanners) says that “Isolation is the dream killer”. You don’t need self-discipline and you don’t need self improvement if you’ll just get other people to support you and hold you accountable.
Judith Morgan (our July Scanners Night Special Guest) runs a great membership site to do just this. It’s lonelyentrepreneur.com and if you’re one of the first 1000 joiners, you get to be a member for life for FREE.
Here’s what you get: Access coaching calls with Business Coach Judith Morgan, get coached live, ask your questions and get answers, update us with your progress, be held accountable, get pointers, audio classes, business plan guides, millionaire ideas, and wealth creation strategies. Network with other solo entrepreneurs; give and receive wisdom; become part of a Mastermind Team.
And all for free if you join right now. Why free? Because we want to reach a critical mass of 1000 people so that the site will have huge value to everyone who joins. There are currently nearly 800 members. At the current rate of signups, we should hit our target very soon. (So get in fast before we hit 1000 or you’ll have to pay to join!)
This is also a good way to contact other scanners.

They call the web interactive but really it’s less interactive than a book – at least with a book you can mark sections to come back to or to show to others. Well now you can do that with web pages.
Go to awesomehighlighter.com, enter a website address, mark bits to highlight, then send a short link to it to other people. You’ll be doing a favour to scanners who won’t have to read the whole thing. You could also use this to keep your own highlights (install their toolbar to make it quicker).
Particularly handy if you want to show something on the web to somebody but it’s buried in the middle of a load of other stuff.
Have a look at this nifty page I’ve created with highlights to show what it does:

The only way to make time for all your interests as a Scanner is to outsource the dull stuff to someone else. I do some of this with Ben, a smart 16 year old with good design sense, an ability to write copy and who is generally over-talented in a way that would really grate if he weren’t such a nice chap.
Ben does chores, makes calls, and does PC/website stuff for me at £5-£10 an hour. If you happen to be in North London, see his website (built by himself with a bit of help from me) at BlitzYourTodoList.com

Got an idea for a product but can’t think of a catchy name?
Try NameThis. NameThis is designed to provide a quick and painless way for innovators to find a market-ready name for their company, product or service. Those with a thing in need of a name begin by posting a request for help and paying USD 99. Members of the community then have 48 hours to suggest names and/or invest points in their favourites.
At the end of the 48 hours, NameThis’s system “does some fancy math” and picks three winners. Of the fee paid by the thing’s owner, USD 80 is distributed to those who contributed to the winners: USD 40 goes to the person who picked the first-place name, while USD 10 is shared amongst the influencers on that name; USD 16 goes to the second-place namer, while USD 4 is shared among the influencers on that one; and USD 8 goes to the individual who picked the third-place name, with USD 2 shared among influencers.
And if you’re good at coming up with great names for stuff, why not go and earn a few quid/dollars by suggesting names? (Hey, I think I’ll have a go…)
